Providing For Miniature, Transportable Housing ( Tiny Homes )

Hardin, Texas is a very friendly small town that is tiny house friendly and Mayor Harry Johnson passed and signed and ordinance NO. 2021 11-9TH on Nov. 8, 2021.

Highlights Of The Bill

  • Hardin will allow the creation of a tiny house park on a unified development with individual lease pads with common areas  and open spaces, on which privately owned tiny houses can be placed.
  • Tiny House Defined-For purposes of this Ordinance, a “Tiny House” is defined as a principal residential dwelling that has a square footage of no less than one hundred (100) square feet and no greater than nine hundred (900) square feet, with said dwelling being structurally attached to a transportable chassis, with or without a permanent foundation, capable of being connected to available utilities including plumbing (water and sewer service), mechanical, natural gas, communications, and electrical systems. 
  • Tiny Houses constructed or otherwise located in the city shall be subject to a minimum size, sleeping room size, width, depth, a requirement for a restroom, and construction standard.
  •  Mobile, or wheeled, platforms shall be permitted in the form of a trailer vehicle that is registered with the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles with tie down and skirting requirements.

ABLE HOUSING (TINY HOMES); PROVIDING FOR A CON-
FLICTS RESOLUTION CLAUSE; PROVIDING A SEVERABILITY
CLAUSE; PROVIDING A SAVINGS CLAUSE; PROVIDING A
PENALTY OF FINE NOT TO EXCEED TWO THOUSAND DOLLARS
($2,000) FOR EACH OFFENSE; AND PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE DATE.

Hardin is in the eastern part of Liberty County at the junction of State Highway 146 and Farm Road 834. State Highway 146 is the major highway traveling north to Livingston and south to Liberty. The City is located six miles north of Liberty, Texas. Houston, Baytown and Beaumont are less than an hour drive away.

Hardin grew up after the construction of the Beaumont, Sour Lake and Western Railway, when the heirs of the influential Hardin family donated land for a town site. The plat was filed in August 1907 by W. F. Hardin, a railroad officer and R. C. Duff, president of the Western Townsite Company. In 1920 the local post office was changed from nearby Walter to Hardin. By that time Hardin had several stores, a cotton gin, a school, and two churches. The population was eighty. In 1935 the Hardin oilfield was discovered west of town. Other deposits were subsequently found in new fields throughout the area, thus sparking further community growth.

Hardin is primarily an agricultural area. The Hardin Independent School District is a state recognized school system consisting of an elementary, middle school and high school campus.

In January of 2003, the Texas Department of Transportation installed a full signalization light at the intersection of Hwy 146 North and FM 834, located in the center of town and close proximity to the school. A beautiful new City Hall brick building was constructed in 2004.

The Hardin Community Center provides the Senior Citizens with a balanced meal and fellowship on a daily basis. The Liberty County ESD No 7 Fire Department located in the middle of Hardin is a well-equipped department which includes heavy rescue equipment. United Pentecostal Church, Hardin Methodist Church and Hardin Baptist Church are available for your choice of worship.

The Hardin Lions Club is always ready to help those in need. Other businesses within the city limits include a large feed store, a home town grocery, a beauty shop, a barber shop, daycare center, a convenience store and a discount store among others.

Hardin is a small yet growing community; a good place to live and raise a family; where people care about people.

Hardin is centrally located between Houston and Beaumont with easy access to either location. According to the Cenus, Hardin’s 2020 population of 961, makes Hardin the 832nd largest city in Texas and the 10474th largest city in the United States. Hardin is currently growing at a rate of 1.37% annually and its population has increased by 17.34% since the most recent census, which recorded a population of 819 in 2010.
