The new OSMTH committee has begun development of new ICC/THIA 1215, Design, Construction, Inspection and Regulation of Tiny Houses for Permanent Occupancy. The first public committee meeting was held on January 31, 2024. There have already been 11 meetings and the first draft went public for public comments and on the 11th meeting, they have started going over the comments.
If you are interested in the future of the tiny house industry and want to contribute to the direction, I would start paying attention to what they are doing at ICC.
The standard has taken a change of direction that is focusing on a Small Residential Unit ( SRU) up to 1200 square feet, with a tiny house as a subcategory under a SRU that is 400 square feet or less.
In a tiny house standard, the term tiny house is only mentioned twice. I feel this is a big industry grab for large manufacturers that build to scale to squeeze out the small manufacturers.
I submitted many comments and I have submitted a appeal to the standard.
The outcome and direction is already rigged and the Vote Is Stacked for their agenda because they hand picked the voting committee members from their own board and close colleagues to stack the vote, instead of creating a diverse group that is required by the ANSI Essential Requirements in a standard development setting.
What Incentive Would A Jurisdiction Have To Lower A Square Footage Requirement?
What incentive would a jurisdiction have to lower the square footage to allow a tiny house 400 square feet or less, if the SRU becomes the norm? ZERO.
I have sincerely tried to participate as a respectful stakeholder but every comment, suggestion, idea has been denied including a certification work group that is well within the scope of the committee but it has been blocked.
