Tiny Homes Of Maine Call To Action

Zoom Call Jan. 19th, 2021 Tuesday 6AM  PST

Tiny Homes Of Maine-  Corinne Watson, founder of Tiny Homes Of Maine  is putting out the call for a zoom conversation to weigh in on a proposed bill to help address the housing crisis and provide more flexible housing options across the State.

“The Act to Allow Tiny Homes to Provide Affordable Housing Choice” will make it easier for people to live in tiny houses and help clarify how municipalities can allow tiny houses within their communities.

The conversation will look for participants to help shape the draft bill and look to gain more insight from municipalities, housing advocates, and people who are trying to live in a tiny house. We welcome CEOs, planners, managers, economic development directors, housing advocates, realtors, and others to join the discussion.”

Tiny Homes Of Maine Was A Major Proponent Of Tiny House Bill LD 1981

Corinne Watson was a major proponent in 2020 to help pass LD 1981, sponsored by Senator Michael Carpenter and signed by Governor Janet T. Mills Brown on March 18th, 2020. This bill  defined what a tiny house and allows for the titling of a tiny house as a camp trailer or a trailer.

LD 1981 ensures that tiny homes can be built and sold in Maine, reversing a previous mandate issued from the Secretary of State in June 2019, which banned issuing titles and registrations for tiny homes.

Backstory: Mobile Tiny Houses In Maine Hit A Major Roadblock

One of the attractions of tiny houses is the ability to place the small structures on a trailer with wheels, creating a mobile — or portable — dwelling. This allows the occupants the option of moving whenever the mood strikes them.

But this modern-day nomadic lifestyle hit a roadblock in Maine this past summer when municipalities were notified by the Maine Secretary of State that the Bureau of Motor Vehicles would no longer register, assign vehicle identification numbers to or title tiny homes on wheels.

The registration and title rules change in Maine does not impact tiny homes that are built or placed on permanent footings or foundations.
